General description : This is a rather rare version of the Chuberry alto. It´s one of the last ones, before the changing of the keywork started and the Transitional period started. This is the so-called Artist version: gold plated body and keywork and a unique bell engraving. Engraving of these gold-plated instruments (also on trumpets and other Conn instruments) was done by the famous Stenberg brothers. Lots of info available on the internet on this: have a look… This engraving is not a portrait, but a landscape engraving of a sailing boat on a lake. I´ve seen a similar engraving on a Conn trumpet, not exactly the same but identical scenery. It´s a beautiful and very detailed engraving.
This alto was built early 1929, so shortly before the Great Depression. The Stenberg brothers stopped engraving the gold-plated instruments then, as it was too expensive and there was no demand anymore for gold-plated instruments. Only a couple of Conn instruments were hand-engraved with a special engraving after 1929, mostly on customer order.

Condition : This horn is in extremely nice condition. No damage, no dents, no repairs, almost no wear on the finish. It was completely overhauled using Prestini brown leather pads with domed metal resonators. The neck fits perfectly, has no pulldown and a working microtuner. The rollers were probably replaced during a previous overhaul, as they are black (Original rollers are the white cellulose rollers). The rolled tone holes are in original condition.
The black Conn case is also very nice and in great condition. It probably belonged to a 6M Ladyface alto from the 1940´s.
